Dirty Deeds CX – round 2 report 25.7.10 by kiwicyclist

Well, who would have thought?  Melbourne turned on another spectacular spring like day for Dirty Deeds CX race 2.    We were expecting mud and wet weather but the conditions were perfect – almost too warm.

The course was located in Darebin Parklands and was different in character to the first race – a much bigger area covered with plenty of opportunities for a long drag race and faster speeds around the course, barriers to jump in the flat sections, a nice fast footpath section around the back, a couple of hills, tight banks to turn around, singletrack and a bit of mud thrown in for good measure.

Nice to see many more spectators and what seemed like a few more competitors in each group – as well as the Jamis bikes demo tent, cake & coffee stalls .

The open category started out first at 1pm and was a hard fought contest between a couple of riders including the eventual winner – wearing a red skinsuit putting in a serious effort for the best dressed of the day competition – sponsored by Northside Wheelers – to win a Rapha cross jersey.  We also had our bmx rider from last time and a serious challenge from Matt on his fixie again.

BMX rules!

Doing it the hard way on a fixie

Jess, one of the two Brunswick CC club captains,  setting a fine example:

The CX category kicked off at 2pm again with around 40 competitors – I  thought the first corner was going to be interesting as half the field seemed determined to try and get around it first – with a $5 prize offered as an incentive.  However the race settled down fairly quickly with personal battles being fought around the course – in my case Angry and I swapping positions in the latter half of the race only for him to pull away over the barriers to beat me in the end.  I checked my heartrate midrace and noticed it was sitting on about 95%.

ShifterDan www.shifterbikes.com and Andy www.fyxomatosis.com  had fixed me up with a nice mavic/record wheelset, nos gransport derailleur and suntour bar shifter to give me a 6 speed setup for the bike at short notice during the week so I was lucky to have a good range of gears to play which made life a lot easier.   My results were not stellar (about 35th out of 45 riders) but hey, 12th place on the last lap is not to be sneezed at!

Once again an awesome day, made memorable having my 5 yr old son yelling encouragement and helping with a beer handup on the hill.
