Melburn Roobaix – the Hell of Northcote by kiwicyclist

The annual Melburn Roobaix ride was held on Sunday. It is a tribute ride to the legendary Paris Roubaix ride that takes place across a network of backroads and most importantly paved alleyways across Melbourne to finish with a victory lap around the Harrison Street Velodrome in Northcote.

I had participated in the previous 3 editions of the ride but was away from Melbourne for the weekend for family commitments and could not take part this year – lack of credits in the leave-pass bank after a trip to the Tour Downunder in January and various other cycle-event related activities.

However I was lucky enough to receive a copy of the route map and brevet card last week and was intending to reconnoitre the route before the weekend until work commitments and a cold intervened. So, the plan is to undertake the ride later this week/weekend. If anyone wants to join me on the ‘alternative Melburn Roobaix” let me know via the comments section or directly.

A good overview of the ride and photos from Sunday can be found over at http://www.cyclingtipsblog.com/2010/05/melburn-roobaix-hell-of-the-northcote/#more-11492

It is a great ride, unique as far as I can tell for Australia, and should be on everyone’s list for next year.
