My good friend Mark was over for the weekend from Auckland for a visit and coincided with fantastic autumn weather. I took him out to the 1 n 20 via Burwood Highway and back via Ferntree gully. He borrowed my Merckx and if I thought it would slow him down on the climb I was sadly mistaken. It was a quick tempo climb up that had me struggling to stay in contact. However it was a magic ride through long afternoon shadows that showed views of the city from a different perspective.
We don’t normally ride out that way late afternoon and the ride out and back was unsettling with a lot of weekend traffic to contend with as well as plenty of daytrippers heading up into the hills to make the most of such a glorious day. We returned just as the sun was going down – a nervous smashfest home in failing light with no lights.
Tip to self – next time I’ll remember to take lights if venturing out late afternoon during a Melbourne autumn day.
